Letter from Mrs. Connelly
Hello STA Families! I am super excited for our new school year to begin!! I have worked with Mrs. Hubert in the past and feel so privileged to have her as our leader at STA. We will experience some changes for sure, but I am thrilled with the direction that our special school will be moving in. As the STA School Counselor, my role is to work with all of our students in some capacity. I will be teaching classroom lessons, and will be running some topical small groups. I will have lunch bunches with everyone, and will check in individually with those students that are brought to my attention . Please reach out and let me know if you have questions or concerns regarding the emotional well being of your children. Things are unfortunately not normal yet. The pandemic has impacted each person so differently. I am including some tips as we reenter into this school year. PREPARING FOR YOUR STUDENT’S RETURN TO SCHOOL 1. Prepare yourself first. Don’t talk through your preparations or obstacles with your kids. Vent privately to other adults and problem solve your dilemmas outside of your child's hearing. Your child is processing enough: we don’t want them processing the adult side of things. 2. Use clear, simple language to explain masks and social distancing in a way that frames masks and social distancing as an act of kindness to others. 3. Reassure your child that the smartest scientists in the world are working on COVID and Mrs. Hubert is listening to all of them to keep us safe. 4. If your child is totally excited with no concerns – roll with it! Don’t respond to your child’s excitement with your concerns or adult dilemmas to process. Fully embrace your child’s positivity. 5. If your child is not positive, acknowledge their feelings and validate them while re-framing their worries into reassurance that STA is using all recommended safe procedures. Demonstrate how to cope with uncomfortable feelings. No plan is ideal for anyone now, but nevertheless, demonstrate positive thinking. I am here for you and your children. Please reach out with any concerns that you may have. I am happy to do check ins with any kids that may need extra TLC. I feel confident that as long as we work together to support our children we will all get through this successfully! Warmest Regards, Schalleen Connelly STA School Counselor |
